The afternoon of my hike on the day I took this shot was balmy for winter, and I was wearing only shorts and a t-shirt. Originally, I had intended to descend from the trail before dark, but discovering my daypack still had a torch in it from a previous dusk hike, I decided to hang around a couple of hours for a few night shots (without a tripod, and long before image stablisation). All I can remember is, I was so cold by the time it was truly dark I could hardly stop myself shaking like a leaf, let alone keep the camera still! By the time I took this shot, it was pitch black, and the torch battery was nearly flat, so most of the hike back down was in near complete darkness!
