In this photo the response vessel has deployed side arm collection systems on both sides of the vessel. As the response vessel moves forward, oil on the surface of the water is herded into the collection pocket formed by the booms stretched on the outriggers. The trapped oil is then removed from the pocket by skimmers located inside the vessel or lowered over the side. BSEE Preparedness Analysts from the Oil Spill Preparedness Division (OSPD) regularly inspect these types of equipment and observe industry training and exercise activities to ensure compliance with regulations and to monitor the overall vigor of the oil spill preparedness and response community.
